Frequently asked questions about the National Mileage Register

  • What is the National Mileage Register?

The National Mileage Register (NMR) is a service owned and operated by HPI Ltd. It is a database of vehicle mileages, and is designed to stamp out the practice of "clocking" cars. The National Mileage Register (NMR) is a service provided to both motoring trade and consumers to allow customers to check the mileage of a vehicle they are purchasing against our records for mileage discrepancies.

  • How is it used?

Our database contains over 140 million mileages and is a key tool for the motor industry in the fight against car clocking. The NMR database is used by over 20,000 dealers to ensure that the vehicles they sell are genuine and our records have been checked by thousands of private individuals a year when buying a car. We regularly liaise with Trading Standards who are fully aware of the service we provide and we are also registered under the Data Protection Act.

  • Why have I been asked to provide information?

Dealers are at risk of prosecution under the Trade Description Act 1968 and the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading regulations of 2008 if they have not taken all reasonable precautions to ensure that the mileage of any used vehicle they sell is accurate. We act on behalf of our customers, requesting information from the previous keepers of the vehicle in an attempt to verify the mileage shown. By carrying out this procedure we are helping to prevent innocent purchasers like you from buying vehicles with incorrect mileage readings.

  • Am I being investigated? Is this vehicle under suspicion?

The vehicle we have written to you about has not been singled out because we think there may be a problem and there is no suggestion that this vehicle, or you as one of its recorded keepers, is in any way under suspicion. The vehicle we are investigating may have been offered to a dealer for sale or part exchange. Names and addresses of previous keepers are obtained from the DVLA or the registration document, via official channels. This information is not passed on to the dealer or any third party and is not used for any purpose other than to request verification of the mileage history of the vehicle.

  • Where did you get my details from?

We obtain previous keeper details from the DVLA or the registration document, via official channels, and will only ever use your details in relation to this mileage investigation. This information is not passed on to the dealer or any third party and is not used for any purpose other than to request verification of the mileage history of the vehicle. Further information on the use of DVLA keeper data can be found in this PDF document.
